THERESA LUNGARO-MIFSUD trained in classical ballet, Jazz and contemporary dance at Tanya Bayona Academy. From a young age she was aware of the importance of furthering her studies and attended several courses at The Academia Nazionale di Danza in Rome, The Conservetoire de Danse et Musique in Paris as well as private courses in London.

At the age of 19 she was offered a teaching post with Tanya Bayona where she was able to keep up her dance training as well as develop her teaching skills. She gained her fellowship in 1991 and in 1992 following a year teaching and dancing in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne; she passed her Enrico Cecchetti Diploma. Upon her return to Malta, Theresa took up the post of Assistant director with Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy of Ballet and she performed regularly as prinicipal dancer with the school company in both local and international festivals.

In 1999, she founded The Dance Workshop; here she is responsible for both the academic and artistic sides of the school. Since last October, she has been running the Foundation and Certificate of Dance Education Courses (teacher training) for the ISTD. Every year she co-ordinates the school’s dance production which has been held for the last 6 years at St. Agatha’s Auditorium, creating an adapted ballet for the lower and middle school as well as choreographing short pieces for the senior ballet students.

Theresa has recently been awarded a scholarship to attend the international summer school organised by the Cecchetti Council America to be held in Michigan, in July 2006. This is the second scholarship given to Ms Lungaro-Mifsud by the Cecchetti Society; the first was to attend a summer course in the UK in 2000. Theresa is the local Exam Organiser (Malta) for the ISTD and she is very proud to be the first Maltese examiner for ISTD.. Theresa is a regular guest teacher at the Cecchetti International Summer School, held annually in the UK. She has also been invited to teach in Italy, later this year. Theresa has furthered her international teaching career this year by teaching both in Norway and in the North of Italy


PAMELA KERR is the senior assistant of the Classical faculty and is also responsible for the Flamenco faculty of The Dance Workshop. She started her ballet training at the Tanya Bayona Academy. By the age of ten she also started Flamenco under the direction of Rosanna Maya. She participated in various festivals and shows, both locally and abroad, including Coreografia d’Autore in Livorno in 1997. After spending six months studying at the London Studio Centre, Pamela returned to Malta and resumed her dance training locally. In 2004, she obtained her Enrico Cecchetti Diploma becoming the first Maltese candidate to pass as a dancer. Pamela was awarded her Fellowship teaching qualification in August 2009. She is also a practising assistant psychologist.


MARIA LOUISE GINGELL teaches classical ballet. She started her ballet training at Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy of Ballet. She pursued thorough training in the various disciplines including Classical Ballet, Spanish and Contemporary. She was awarded various scholarships in dance in Malta and abroad, namely at Bush Davis College and the London Studio Centre. In 2000, she passed her Associate Examination of the ISTD with honours and was invited to join the teaching faculty at The Dance Workshop. She was awarded her Associate Diploma in 2004 and has completed her Certificate in Dance Education in 2007.


FRANCESCA BARTOLO first started Ballet lessons at the Tanya Bayona Academy and then joined ‘The Dance Workshop’ when it was founded in 1999. As well as dancing ballet, in 2005 she also started Flamenco lessons directed by Pamela Kerr. While at ‘The Dance Workshop’, Francesca received the ‘Junior Associate Award’ in 2002, as well as the ‘Spanish Dance Award’ in 2007. In 2008 she attended the Cecchetti Summer School in Cichester and in 2010 she participated in the International Ballet Master Classes in Prague, alongside vocational students from various international dance schools. Francesca has been a ballet assistant for the past two years and in June 2010 was awarded her Foundation in Dance Instruction (FDI) qualifications. She is currently reading towards a degree in B.Ed Primary (Hons) as well as continuing her ballet qualifications.


FRANCESCA ABELA TRANTER trained at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy in modern dance, and later graduating from the London Contemporary School in UK specialising in contemporary dance and choreography. Her extensive dance background has led her to teach and train dancers for many performances, festivals, and choreographic platforms since 1981. Holder of the First Prize in choreography in Malta for contemporary dance, her works have been performed in international theatres and venues all over Europe. She has been influential in the development of Contemporary dance in Malta and is a key player in collaborating with overseas artists by creating workshops and performances such as The Featherstonehaughs, Phoenix Dance, Union Dance, Laurie Booth, Jasmin Vardimon, Protein Dance, and many others and has taught internationally at festivals. Resident choreographer for the Tanya Bayona Dance Theatre Company for 10 years, she founded Contact Dance Company in 1999. Her branded style of work gives the body its own voice through movement-based performances that explores observation and challenges the boundaries of contemporary dance practice. Francesca continues to freelance as a teacher and choreographer at The Dance Workshop, Creative Dance Studio and The Dance Conservatoire.


RACHEL GRECH started classical ballet at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutatine Academy of Ballet. She furthered her training at the Dance Workshop under the direction of Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud and performed in many local productions. In 1999, Rachel started contemporary dance and joined Contact Dance Company in 2003, performing at several international venues, festivals and platforms with this company. Rachel’s choreography, Women on Common Grounds, was awarded first prize for the Choreographic Awards 2005, organised by the Dance Council - Malta. She is graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Malta.


CLAIRE CASSOLA is responsible for the Jazz faculty at The Dance Workshop. She started her training at the age of 16 with Felix Busuttil and later joined the academy of Tanya Bayona. In 1989 Claire won first Prize in an International Contemporary Festival held in Sicily with choreography by Francesca Abela and in 1992 she was awarded the Brigit Espinosa – London Studio Centre Scholarship where she had the opportunity to work with international choreographers and teachers. Claire has established herself locally as a principal dancer taking on several leading roles during performances with Tanya Bayona Dance Theatre, YADA and The Dance Workshop. She is a qualified Modern Dance Teacher and is currently working with The Dance Workshop, The College of Jazz and St. Michael's Foundation. She was awarded the Associate Diploma in 2004 and her Licentiate in October 2007 and her CDE in 2010.


DIANE PORTELLI started her training at the age of three at Tanya Bayona academy of ballet. She danced ballet for many years but is presently training Contemporary, Spanish and Jazz. She was awarded the Luisello award for Spanish Dance in 1996 and the Duke of Ellington award for modern dance in 1998. Diane has attended various courses both locally and abroad. In 2000, she participated in the World Championships for Performing Arts in Hollywood, together with two other dancers, where they won two gold medals under the direction of Janet Vella. Diane obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce at University of Malta in 2003, and is currently working towards her FDI qualifications in modern theatre.


JES SCIBERRAS has been teaching at The Dance Workshop since 2002. He is a freelance choreographer and has choreographed for various companies such as Masquerade (Jack & the Beanstalk Pantomime 2008-09), MADC (Fourplay, 2005-08 & Company, 2007) National Orchestra goes POP, 2006 , YADA (Strait Street, Zodiaco & Dirty Dancing), Curtain Raiser (Cabaretic), All for One (Chess, 2003), Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Ballet (Notte Bianca 2007, Scrooge, Latvia Dance Festival , MCI Concerts, FISEC Games and Journey), Celebrities & M.T.A.(Chinese New Year Hong Kong 2006 ) the movie Clarence Call for Buccaneer films Inc U.S.A., Eurovision Song Contests (Ira Losco, Georgina, Ruth Casingena, Karen Polidano, Romina Mamo and also Olivia Lewis with whom Jes also performed Vertigo in Helsinki. In 2006, Jes was nominated for the The Outstanding Young Person Award organised by the Junior Chamber International (Malta). In 2008, Jes collaborated with The Dance Workshop, The Drop Out Band and Ritienne Azzopardi in the performance Cole Porter on The Steps for Notte Bianca, where Jes was the Artistic Director.


SUE VASSALLO started her training at Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Ballet at the age of 9, under the direction of Sonja Laskowski and later Jes Sciberras and Kristina Schranz. In 2001, she won the award for ‘Best Jazz Technique’ and later took up Hip Hop classes. In 2005 Sue joined the teaching faculty of Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Ballet, teaching Jazz and Hip Hop. In 2007 she presented a choreography in the ‘Barcelona Costa Brava International Dance Festival’ in Spain. In 2008, Sue attended an intensive dance course ‘Broadway a Tropea’ in Italy, taking dance classes with Hip Hop choreographer ‘LUAM.’ In 2009, she accompanied a group of students to Bari, Italy for the intensive course ‘World Dance Movement’ where she was presented with an award for Hip Hop and was invited to perform one of her choreographies together with her students on the Final Performance Night. Sue has performed and choreographed for many shows including, The Goldwell Hair Awards, Junior Eurovision and the Season Launch of PBS’s new television programmes. In 2010 she was asked to choreograph and perform for the shows of Hip Hop icons JA RULE and FLO RIDA at Sky Club. Sue taught theatre dance to the senior students at ‘Drama Troupe’ from 2007 to 2010. She also formed part of the cast of the ‘MADC’ Pantomime ‘Hercules’ which was held at the Manoel Theatre in 2006/7. Sue is currently working towards obtaining her FDI in Modern Dance. Sue is also furthering her education in Musical Theatre and attends singing lessons with Gillian Zammit. She teaches at The Dance Workshop, Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Ballet and Incite Motion. Sue is a qualified Child Carer and manages a Child Care Centre.
