The Dance Workshop had one of it’s students chosen to take part in one of the most prestigious Cecchetti competitions. Theresa Lungaro Mifsud coached Keith Micallef to compete against 45 other dancers from all over the world, namely the UK, Italy, Spain, Malta, America, Australia, Canada and Japan. This was the third time that this competition was organised and this was the first time that it was held in Europe. The competition took place at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester, UK. Keith Micallef got through the preliminary round of auditions which led him to the semi final in Manchester. The competition entailed taking part in two adjudicated classes, one in Contemporary dance presented by Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre and another class in Classical ballet presented by Anita Young, who teaches at the upper school of The Royal Ballet. In the evening the competitors presented their variations in both dance genres. On the first evening Keith Micallef presented a contemporary solo choreographed by Francesca Abela Tranter, contemporary teacher at The Dance Workshop. On the second evening Keith interpreted the Blue BIrd variation which was coached by Theresa Lungaro Mifsud. The standard of dance was extremely high on both nights and all competitors worked extremely hard trying to stand out in front of the international jury, which was made of six experts in the field all with an extensive career in dance. The Dance Workshop would also like to thank the Malta Arts Fund who supported Mr. Micallef to be able to attend this competition and therefore help the standard of dance continue to improve in Malta. The Maestro Cecchetti Award was won by Ashleigh McKimmie from Australia.

The Dance Workshop was founded by Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud in 1999 to provide a creative home for young bodies, minds and spirits.

The Dance Workshop offers outstanding dance tuition for children, youths and adults, nurturing creativity and spontaneity while providing a sound technical foundation. Children aged 3-6 years will thrive in creative ballet classes, while older students can choose from a wide selection of dance styles, including Ballet, Contemporary, Spanish and Modern Dance. In 2005, The Dance Workshop became the first ballet school in Malta to be awarded recognition by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing as an Approved Dance Centre.
