The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing is a London based organisation which has branches the world over. It is an institution bringing together several dance disciplines which have been systematically organized so that examinations can be held at various levels. These examinations, which are recognized by the British education authorities and thus the EU, may lead to dance examinations equivalent to Matsec and A level standards. Teacher training examinations are recognised at University level.
Students age 5 and over may take their Classical Ballet examinations in the Cecchetti Method (ISTD). The first two years are dedicated to class examinations where the teacher accompanies groups, each of 4 students into the exam which has a relaxed class room atmosphere. The first formal examination at Grade 1 level is taken at the age of 7. There are 6 grades and these are followed by the vocational examination namely Intermediate, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2.
Modern Theatre Examinations are also held annually.
The Dance Workshop is very proud to have been the first ISTD Approved Dance Centre in Malta. Candidates working towards their teaching Examinations at Diploma in Dance Instruction and Diploma in Dance Education will be able to cover all aspects of this course at the studios.
Examinations for the Cecchetti Faculty are held twice a year namely in early December and early June, whilst Modern Theatre Branch examinations are held in early July.
